Melike Kara (*1985, lives and works in Cologne/DE) develops her painterly work simultaneously with the writing of poetry and the production of sculptures, videos and other media. Especially in her works on canvas she has developed her own series of figures. These apparently genderless figures seem to come from an indeterminate time and place. For years, the main medium for her works on canvas has been thick oil pastels, which she regularly expands with new color palettes or materials. For her exhibition in St.Gallen, Kara will create a new body of work that includes a series of large-scale works on canvas, as well as an installation of sculptures. In her first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland, Melike Kara takes a personal look at her family›s Kurdish-Alevi roots, addressing questions of origin, tradition, and community.
