Three painters from Germany give an insight into their work at the Kunsthalle. Axel Kasseböhmer presents an oil painting and three energetic, lemon yellow landscape paintings. Klaus Merkel installs the work Katalogbilder-Monogramm (engl. ‘catalogue pictures monogram’). Oil paintings of the same format, painted in a culinary style, are hung to fill the wall, and in front of them are two picture panels on which the same pictures are listed in a painted table of contents in small format, lined up like signs. Thomas Werner continues the ornamental history through abstract painting. What all three artists have in common is their examination of the history of painting, a kind of archaeology of the boundary between ancient and modern art. The ornament is explored as a possibility of abstraction.
